A recent study highlights concerns among parents regarding the nutritional value of their children’s packed lunches. According to the research, one in five parents admits to using the same sandwich filling daily, often due to convenience or their child’s preferences. As schools prepare for the new academic year, this study brings the importance of balanced meals to the forefront.
Dietician Lucy Kerrison offers insight into the “ideal” lunchbox, which should include a protein-filled sandwich, a vegetable snack, fruit, and a dairy item. Kerrison suggests including one portion of starches, such as bread, pasta, or rice, along with one to two portions of vegetables and a portion of fruit. This combination, she says, is key to providing children with the necessary energy and nutrients to power through the school day.
The poll, conducted among 800 parents who prepare packed lunches, revealed that 60% of parents worry about ensuring their children’s meals are both nutritious and appealing. The study, commissioned by bread manufacturer Warburtons, found that sandwiches remain the most popular lunch option, with 20% of parents packing the same filling daily. Ham was the most common choice, followed closely by cheese.
Despite the popularity of sandwiches, 75% of parents are unsure whether they are providing a healthy option. However, Kerrison reassures them that sandwiches can be a great way to deliver essential nutrients such as fibre, B vitamins, calcium, and protein. The simplicity and convenience of sandwiches make them a practical choice for busy mornings, while still offering a balanced meal.
The research also revealed that yoghurt is the top “sweet treat” parents include in lunchboxes, followed by biscuits and chocolate bars. Additionally, six in ten parents consider the lunches they prepare to be “somewhat” nutritious, but many struggle to find a balance. Thirty-nine percent find it challenging to keep lunch options varied, and 34% admit to difficulties in providing nutritional balance.
To address these concerns, Warburtons has partnered with Lucy Kerrison and celebrity mum of three, Kimberley Walsh, ahead of the back-to-school season. The aim of the campaign is to show parents that basic lunches, such as sandwiches, can be part of a healthy, balanced diet while also keeping kids satisfied.
Kimberley Walsh, who understands the pressures of preparing nutritious meals for her children, highlights that returning to simple, delicious sandwiches can help parents ensure their kids receive the right nutrients. The campaign also includes recipe ideas and tips to help parents create healthy packed lunches more easily.
Interestingly, the research found that parents spend nearly 20 minutes each day planning and preparing school lunches. Moreover, 64% of parents have left notes in their children’s lunchboxes, offering words of encouragement, love, or humour.
Jonathan Warburton, representing the bread company, emphasised that making packed lunches can be stressful for parents. He assured them that simple options like sandwiches are still a healthy choice. By working with a nutritionist, Warburtons aims to help parents make packed lunches as nutritious as possible without the added stress.
As parents gear up for the new school term, this study serves as a reminder that healthy packed lunches for kids don’t have to be complicated. With the right balance of ingredients and a little creativity, parents can ensure their children are well-nourished and ready to tackle the school day.
