Europe’s leading forum for the bioplastics industry, the European Bioplastics Conference (EBC 24), has released its full programme ahead of its two-day event in December. Taking place both in Berlin and online from 10 to 11 December 2024, the conference will bring together global industry leaders, innovators, and policymakers to discuss the latest developments in the bioplastics sector.
The conference will open with a keynote address from Kristin Schreiber, Director of DG GROW at the European Commission, who will highlight the policy trends that are currently shaping the industry. This will be followed by a presentation from Theodora Nikolakopoulou, also from DG GROW, focusing on biodegradable polymers and their role in the EU’s Fertilising Products Regulation. Rhodes Yepsen, Executive Director of the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI), will address the need for policy, standards, and compostability claims to align, particularly in light of the upcoming Global Plastics Treaty.
The first day will also feature an overview of the latest market data for bioplastics. Marc Verbruggen, CEO of Emirates Biotech, will offer insights into policies and market trends in the Middle East and India. Additionally, René Bethmann, Senior Innovation Manager at VAUDE Sport, will present brand owners’ perspectives on biobased plastics and their innovative applications in product development.
Focus on Environmental Impact
On 11 December, the second day of the conference will delve into the environmental implications of bioplastics. Miriam Weber, CEO of Hydra, will explore the persistence of microplastics in the environment and examine the differences between biodegradable and non-degradable polymers. Patrizia Pfohl from BASF will present research findings on the effectiveness of biodegradable mulch film, while Christian Bonten, Chairholder at the IKT Stuttgart, will discuss the use of biobased plastics in technical and long-term applications.
The event is expected to provide valuable insights into how bioplastics can contribute to a more sustainable future, addressing both environmental challenges and the growing demand for innovative materials.
Free Side Events
Alongside the main conference, two additional side events will be offered at no cost to attendees. On 9 December, there will be a session focused on recycling technologies and approaches, in partnership with EU-funded research and innovation projects. On 12 December, participants will celebrate the completion of the EU-funded project PRESERVE: The Bio-based Packaging Revolution, which aims to revolutionise packaging solutions through biobased materials.
Driving Towards a Circular Economy
Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics, highlighted the importance of EBC 24 as a platform for dialogue and collaboration within the industry. “We strongly believe in the potential of bioplastics to meet the rising demand for sustainable solutions. EBC 24 offers a unique opportunity for the industry to come together and drive progress towards a circular economy.”
The conference is supported by major sponsors including BASF, CJ Biomaterials, DIN CERTCO, Emirates Biotech, NatureWorks, and TÜV Austria. Media partners and other key industry players will also contribute to discussions, ensuring that participants leave with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the bioplastics sector.
With increasing global awareness of the need for sustainable alternatives to conventional plastics, EBC 24 is expected to provide actionable insights that could shape the future of the bioplastics industry. The event will cater to both in-person attendees in Berlin and those participating online, ensuring broad accessibility to these critical conversations.
