A Leeds-based social enterprise played host to a two-day event celebrating International Women’s Day, bringing together over 60 women from the Chapeltown community to connect, learn, and embrace sustainable fashion.
Unity Enterprise, the not-for-profit subsidiary of BME housing association Unity Homes and Enterprise, welcomed guests to Leeds Media Centre for the Preloved Fashion Collective Launch. The event, organised by Beverley Brown of Ebony Milestone, aimed to empower women through ethical and sustainable fashion choices.
The gathering featured networking opportunities, styling sessions, and discussions on how preloved and African-inspired fashion can support both personal style and the environment. Brown described the weekend as more than just a celebration, calling it a platform for women to come together, share experiences, and support one another.
“The event was a true reflection of women supporting women, style with purpose, and the beauty of community,” she said. “Seeing so many women connect, learn, and uplift each other was truly inspiring.”
Attendee Alisha Wright praised the sense of togetherness at the event, highlighting the diverse range of women who participated.
“Getting to meet so many inspiring women and celebrating in my community was so grounding,” she said. “From former nurses to CEOs, everyone had their own stories, showing the different paths to success. It’s so important to stay in touch with what’s happening locally and support where we can.”
The event took place at one of three business centres in Chapeltown managed by Unity Enterprise. Across its sites, the organisation provides affordable workspaces for 93 businesses, supporting over 1,200 jobs in the area.
Adrian Green, Unity Enterprise Manager, said it was a privilege to host the event and praised its success.
“Bringing people from different communities together is a key part of our role. We look forward to working closely with Beverley on future events,” he said.
Unity Homes and Enterprise Chief Executive Cedric Boston also commended the initiative, emphasising the importance of marking International Women’s Day.
“We were delighted to play our part in celebrating this significant occasion. Congratulations to Beverley for organising such a memorable event over two days. I have no doubt it will be the first of many,” he said.
