A recent survey of 2,000 adults who are attracted to men has revealed that facial hair plays a significant role in first impressions and attraction. Among the most favoured facial hair styles, stubble stood out as the top choice for 55% of respondents, with actor Chris Hemsworth as a popular example. Interestingly, while stubble emerged as the sexiest option, moustaches ranked as the least attractive, preferred by only 3% of those surveyed.
The survey, conducted by Wilkinson Sword, highlights that facial hair is not just about grooming—it’s also about personality perception. Professor Tim Andrews, a facial perception expert working with Wilkinson Sword, explains that within 10 seconds of meeting someone, their appearance can create lasting assumptions, even if these are not always accurate. Facial hair, like makeup for women, can significantly shape how a man is perceived.
Stubble: The Most Attractive Facial Hair Style
The results indicate that stubble is seen as the most attractive facial hair style, with many respondents associating it with an ‘outgoing’ personality. Short beards came in second place, perceived as a sign of intelligence. On the other hand, those who prefer moustaches and goatees were often seen as ‘arrogant’. This demonstrates how facial hair can influence assumptions about character traits, whether consciously or subconsciously.
For men, keeping a well-groomed appearance isn’t just about looking good, but also feeling confident. Another survey of 994 men revealed that 55% feel sharper after a fresh shave or beard trim, and 34% said it makes them feel more ‘manly’. This boost in confidence may explain why so many men prioritise grooming before social events or dates. In fact, 43% of men stated they always tidy up or shave before a date, showing the importance of grooming in the realm of attraction and first impressions.
Facial Hair Perceptions and Dating
When it comes to online dating profiles, there seems to be a gap between reality and perception. Around 30% of men admitted that their current dating profile picture doesn’t reflect their true facial hair style, potentially leading to mismatched expectations when meeting in person. This disparity highlights the importance of accurately portraying oneself to avoid misunderstandings.
Clean-shaven men were widely viewed as ‘reliable,’ while long beards were associated with laziness. Despite these perceptions, many men tend to stick with familiar styles. A quarter of men expressed concerns that experimenting with a new facial hair look might not suit them, while nearly half (47%) would ignore style suggestions from others altogether.
Interestingly, facial hair also influences the number of compliments men receive. One in five men reported receiving more compliments after grooming, further reinforcing the connection between appearance and confidence.
Euan Condron, a spokesperson for Wilkinson Sword, commented on the survey results: “Our research shows that facial hair significantly impacts both attraction and self-esteem. Men who feel good about their appearance are more likely to project confidence, which can positively influence their dating experiences. However, the key takeaway is that whatever style a man chooses, maintaining a well-groomed look is essential.”
Whether it’s stubble, a short beard, or a clean shave, it’s clear that facial hair choices can impact how men feel about themselves and how they are perceived by others. Grooming, therefore, isn’t just a matter of appearance—it’s a reflection of personal identity and confidence.
