Germany has raised objections to Türkiye’s application to the European Commission for the recognition of döner kebab as a traditional product in the European Union (EU). In response, Bereket Döner, a prominent figure in Turkish cuisine, has defended Türkiye’s cultural heritage by presenting an academic study to support the application.
At a press conference in Istanbul on 5th December, Bereket Döner unveiled research providing historical evidence that highlights the cultural and culinary significance of döner in Turkish history.
“Our research demonstrates that döner is deeply rooted in Turkish history and culture,” stated Mevlüt Ceyhun Tekdemir, Vice Chairman of Bereket Döner’s Board. “From Takiyeddin Efendi’s 16th-century mechanical drawings to insights from Evliya Çelebi, our evidence leaves no doubt about döner’s origins. We trust the European Commission to recognise this heritage appropriately.”
The study, titled Türkiye’s World-Famous Delicacy: Döner, explores historical artefacts, engravings, and documentation, tracing the dish’s roots back to the Ottoman era. It positions döner as not only a culinary icon but also a bridge that connects Turkish and European communities through shared appreciation.
Food as a Bridge, Not a Barrier
“Döner is not about division; it’s about unity,” Tekdemir added. “It’s a culinary tradition that brings people together, blending cultures and tastes in a unique way.”
In addition, Bereket Döner announced plans to expand its Döner Point brand across Europe, starting in Germany. By opening new locations in key cities, the company aims to introduce authentic Turkish döner to a broader audience while enhancing its international presence.
“We’re excited to bring the true taste of Turkish döner to Europe,” said Tekdemir. “Our expansion strategy reflects our commitment to preserving and sharing this cultural treasure with the world.”
Through its efforts, Bereket Döner seeks to safeguard the heritage of Turkish döner and promote its cultural and culinary significance on a global scale.
