A recent study indicates that over a third of UK adults (36%) feel that standard GP-prescribed medications often fail to meet their health needs. The research, conducted by Roseway Labs, a private compounding pharmacy specialising in personalised treatments, underscores a growing dissatisfaction with the traditional one-size-fits-all approach in UK healthcare.
The study also reveals that 28% of respondents are pessimistic about finding solutions for their health conditions in 2025. This sentiment is particularly pronounced among younger demographics, with 80% of Generation Z and 76% of millennials emphasising the importance of having a choice between standard and personalised medicines.
Elizabeth Philp, CEO and Founder of Roseway Labs, commented: “A one-size-fits-all approach often fails to address the complexities of individual health needs, leaving many patients feeling despondent about their future. While regular prescriptions work well for some, others face challenges such as inadequate symptom relief, adverse effects, or difficulty adhering to treatment plans. Personalised medicine can complement NHS treatments and care, offering tailored solutions that empower patients and help them lead healthier lives.”
Personalised medicine, facilitated by compounding pharmacies, offers tailored treatments by adjusting dosages, altering medication forms, or removing allergenic ingredients. This approach can be particularly beneficial for patients with specific needs, such as those with allergies or difficulties adhering to standard treatment plans.
Despite the potential benefits, awareness of personalised medicine remains limited. Only 15% of UK adults can confidently define “compounding pharmacy,” and a mere 8% have discussed personalised medicine options with their GP when standard treatments have proven ineffective.
Miriam Martinez Callejas, Superintendent Pharmacist and Co-Founder of Roseway Labs, stated: “With an ageing population and growing demand for tailored care among Gen Z and millennials, personalised medicine provides an essential option for those whose needs aren’t met by standard treatments. Often likened to the Savile Row of medicine, compounded treatments offer custom dosages, formulations, and combination of ingredients, much like a tailored suit fits where off-the-rack clothing cannot. Our goal is to collaborate with GPs and healthcare professionals to make personalised medicine a key part of future healthcare innovations in the UK.”
The study also highlights that 73% of respondents are open to using a pharmacy that personalises medicines and supplements to better address their health concerns. This growing interest in personalised care options reflects a shift in patient expectations and a desire for more tailored healthcare solutions.
Roseway Labs advocates for the UK health sector to recognise the potential of innovative personalised care options to alleviate pressure on the NHS and address evolving patient needs. By integrating personalised medicine into the healthcare system, there is potential to reduce repeat GP visits caused by ineffective standard prescriptions and improve overall patient outcomes.
As the demand for personalised care continues to rise, especially among younger generations, the integration of personalised medicine into mainstream healthcare could play a crucial role in meeting the evolving expectations of patients and addressing the complexities of individual health needs.
